South Yorkshire Transport Museum
South Yorkshire Transport Museum offers a lively and nostalgic journey through the region’s transport heritage, housed in a former industrial building packed with vehicles, machinery and everyday objects that once kept South Yorkshire moving. The museum’s charm lies in its variety: buses, trams, cars, bicycles and service vehicles sit side by side, each telling a different story of travel, work and community life. Inside, visitors can explore restored vintage buses from Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster, many of which still carry their original liveries and route boards. Classic cars and motorcycles add another layer, showcasing changing design and engineering across the 20th century. The museum’s tram collection is a highlight, with beautifully preserved examples that recall the era when electric trams shaped urban transport. Hands‑on exhibits and open cab access allow visitors to step inside selected vehicles, offering a close look at controls, seating and period fittings. Displays of ticket machines, uniforms, signage and workshop tools reveal the behind‑the‑scenes world of transport operations.
Aldwarke United Kingdom
You will find it at 9 Waddington Way, Aldwarke, Rotherham, South Yorkshire S65 3SH. It is just off the Aldwarke industrial area, not far from Rotherham town centre and easy to reach from the M1. The museum is volunteer run and started out as the Sheffield Bus Museum, now it has around fifty vehicles including buses, a tram, tractors and lots of old transport memorabilia all under one big roof. Because it is in Rotherham, you have a lot close by. Clifton Park Museum is only a few minutes away and sits in a lovely big park with gardens, a splash park and mini golf, perfect if you are with family. For something bigger and hands on, Magna Science Adventure Centre is right nearby and great for kids. If you like stately homes and castles, Wentworth Woodhouse is just up the road in Wentworth village, one of the largest houses in Europe, and Wentworth Castle Gardens with its Stainborough Castle folly is also close. Elsecar Heritage Centre with its craft shops and heritage railway is not far either, and Conisbrough Castle is a short drive away. You also have Meadowhall and the centre of Sheffield with its museums like Weston Park and the Millennium Gallery within easy reach for a full day out.
