Chedham's Yard

About

Chedham’s Yard in Wellesbourne is a wonderfully preserved Victorian workshop complex that offers an authentic glimpse into rural craftsmanship. Hidden for decades behind closed doors, the yard was rediscovered in the early 2000s and later won a national restoration award for its exceptional completeness. Almost everything inside remains exactly where the Chedham family left it, creating a rare time‑capsule atmosphere. The site centres on the wheelwright’s shop, where visitors can see original benches, saws, chisels and templates used to build and repair wooden wagon wheels. The blacksmith’s forge is equally compelling, with tools still hanging in their working positions and the smell of soot lingering in the rafters. Demonstrations on open days show how iron tyres were heated and fitted onto wheels—a dramatic process that once served the entire village. Other highlights include the paint shop, timber store and a collection of agricultural equipment that charts the shift from horse‑drawn transport to early mechanisation. Interpretive displays explain how the Chedham family supported local farms, trades and travellers for more than a century.
