Parham House & Gardens

About

Parham House is one of West Sussex’s most atmospheric Elizabethan mansions, still lived in by the same family who restored it in the 1920s. Built in 1577, the house retains its warm honey‑coloured stone, long galleries and intimate family rooms, giving visitors a rare sense of continuity between Tudor architecture and modern life. Inside, the Great Hall sets the tone with oak panelling, portraits and a magnificent carved screen. The Long Gallery, stretching over 160 feet, is one of the finest in England, once used for exercise during bad weather and now lined with paintings, tapestries and antique furniture. Parham’s collection includes needlework from the 17th century, rare clocks, early maps and personal objects that reveal the tastes of generations who lived here. The Priest’s Room and West Room offer glimpses into quieter domestic spaces, while the Stuart and Georgian rooms show how the house evolved over time. Parham’s atmosphere is shaped not by grandeur alone but by lived‑in charm—fresh flowers from the garden, family photographs and carefully preserved details. Outside, the formal gardens are a major attraction: a walled garden with herbaceous borders, a rose garden, orchards, and a 1920s pleasure ground designed with sweeping lawns and stone terraces.
