St Mary's House & Gardens

About

St Mary’s House & Gardens in Bramber is one of West Sussex’s most enchanting historic homes, a timber‑framed medieval property with over 500 years of stories woven into its beams. Once a lodging for pilgrims travelling to the shrine at Canterbury, it later became a Georgian gentleman’s residence and, in the 20th century, a haven for artists, writers and musicians. Inside, the house is full of character. The Pilgrims’ Hall, with its ancient floor tiles and exposed timbers, sets a wonderfully atmospheric tone. The Music Room is a highlight, decorated with hand‑painted murals and furnished with period instruments that reflect the artistic life of the house. The Victorian Drawing Room preserves elegant furnishings, family portraits and delicate objets d’art, offering a glimpse into refined 19th‑century domestic life. One of the most intriguing features is the secret priest’s chamber, hidden during the Reformation and discovered centuries later. The house also contains rare painted panels, charming staircases and intimate rooms that feel remarkably untouched by time. The gardens are equally captivating. Formal topiary, herbaceous borders, a tranquil moat walk and a romantic orchard create a series of outdoor “rooms” that complement the house’s historic charm. Seasonal flowers and quiet corners make it an ideal place for slow exploration.
