Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is one of West Sussex’s most varied and atmospheric heritage centres, set within a charming timber‑framed building in the town’s historic Causeway. Its collections span over 600 years of local life, offering an unusually rich blend of archaeology, costume, fine art and social history. The museum feels both homely and expansive, with each room revealing a different facet of Horsham’s past. Inside, visitors can explore galleries dedicated to medieval pottery, Tudor domestic life and Victorian trades. The Costume Collection is a highlight, featuring elegant Regency dresses, intricate lacework and everyday garments that chart changing fashions. The museum’s extensive photography archive captures Horsham’s evolution from market town to modern community, while the “Causeway Gallery” showcases paintings, sculpture and decorative arts. One of the most interesting facts is the museum’s connection to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was born nearby; rare manuscripts and memorabilia celebrate his legacy. Another standout is the eclectic “Curiosity Cabinet,” filled with unusual objects from taxidermy to historic toys. The garden, planted with traditional Sussex species, offers a peaceful finale.
