The Salisbury Museum

About

The Salisbury Museum, set within the graceful King’s House on Cathedral Close, offers one of Wiltshire’s richest journeys through time. Its setting is remarkable in itself: a 13th‑century building later remodelled for royalty, with surviving fireplaces, carved beams and long views toward Salisbury Cathedral. Yet the museum’s greatest fascination lies in its archaeological collections, which illuminate the deep prehistory of the surrounding landscape. Inside, the star attraction is the Wessex Gallery, a modern, atmospheric space showcasing finds from Stonehenge, Avebury and other key prehistoric sites. Here you can see the Amesbury Archer’s grave goods, finely crafted Bronze Age jewellery and tools that reveal the sophistication of early communities. The Stonehenge displays offer rare insight into how the monument was built, used and understood across millennia. The museum also holds the Pitt Rivers Collection, an eclectic Victorian assemblage of artefacts that ranges from everyday objects to curious oddities. The Salisbury Gallery explores the city’s medieval and early modern past, with paintings, costumes and civic treasures. Temporary exhibitions often highlight local artists or archaeological discoveries, adding fresh layers to the experience.
