Banff Museum

About

Banff Museum, one of Scotland’s oldest public museums, offers a compact but fascinating journey through the heritage of Banff and the wider northeast coast. Founded in 1828, it began as a collection of natural curiosities and antiquities gathered by local enthusiasts, and that spirit of curiosity still shapes the experience today. Its displays blend archaeology, social history and natural science, revealing how coastal life evolved over centuries. Inside, one of the most interesting highlights is the museum’s collection of Pictish carved stones and early artefacts, which trace the region’s ancient roots. The Victorian natural history displays — including taxidermy specimens and geological finds — preserve the atmosphere of early museum‑making, when collectors sought to catalogue the world in miniature. Local history exhibits explore Banff’s maritime past, its role in regional trade and the stories of notable residents who shaped the town’s identity. Visitors can also see fine examples of local craftsmanship, from silverwork to traditional tools, each offering insight into the skills that supported community life. Though modest in size, Banff Museum feels wonderfully personal, a place where centuries of local memory are gathered under one roof and presented with quiet charm.

Location

Banff Museum sits right in the heart of the old town of Banff in Aberdeenshire, on the High Street. The address is High Street, Banff, AB45 1AE. It is one of the oldest museums in the north of Scotland and holds collections of Banff silver, local history, natural history and a replica of the ancient Deskford Carnyx war trumpet. Just a short stroll away stands the grand Georgian Duff House, a William Adam mansion that now serves as a country-house gallery with fine paintings and riverside walks through its grounds. Across the River Deveron bridge in neighbouring Macduff you can visit the Macduff Marine Aquarium for a look at local sea life. The Temple of Venus, a neat classical folly, sits on the hill nearby, and Banff’s sandy beach is only a few minutes’ walk for a breath of sea air. A little further out you will find Craigston Castle and Delgatie Castle, both historic houses that make pleasant short drives, while the Fordyce Joiner’s Workshop museum offers another slice of traditional craftsmanship.
