The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Aberdeenshire offers one of the most atmospheric and hands‑on lighthouse experiences in Britain. Centred around the historic Kinnaird Head Lighthouse — the only lighthouse built inside a fortified castle — it tells the story of Scotland’s remarkable engineering tradition and the keepers who safeguarded its coasts. The site combines a modern museum with a fully preserved lighthouse, creating a rare opportunity to explore both heritage and working technology. Inside the museum, visitors can see original lenses, foghorns, logbooks and tools used by lighthouse keepers across the country. The giant Fresnel lenses are a highlight, their intricate glasswork demonstrating how 19th‑century innovation revolutionised maritime safety. Exhibits also explore the Stevenson family, the legendary dynasty of engineers responsible for many of Scotland’s most iconic lighthouses. A guided tour of Kinnaird Head is the most memorable part of the visit. You can climb through the old castle structure, walk into the lantern room and stand beside the powerful rotating lens. The keeper’s quarters, with their simple furnishings and coastal views, offer a vivid sense of life lived in isolation and duty.
Fraserburgh Scotland
The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses stands at Kinnaird Head in the fishing port of Fraserburgh on Aberdeenshire’s north-east coast. The address is Kinnaird Head, Stevenson Road, Fraserburgh, AB43 9DU. It is built around Scotland’s first mainland lighthouse, which was ingeniously constructed through the middle of a sixteenth-century castle, and the museum itself holds a fine collection of lighthouse lenses and equipment. Right on the same site you can tour the unique castle-lighthouse and enjoy the views from the top. In Fraserburgh itself the Fraserburgh Heritage Centre offers more local history if it is open. A short drive away stand the ruins of Cairnbulg Castle and the remains of Pitsligo Castle, both with strong ties to the area’s past. Further along the coast or inland you can reach the peaceful Memsie Cairn or head towards Banff for the grand Duff House and the Macduff Marine Aquarium. The surrounding Buchan coastline also has quiet beaches and walking paths if you fancy stretching your legs after the museum.
