Edzell Castle

About

Edzell Castle in Angus is a striking blend of medieval strength and Renaissance elegance, best known for its unique walled garden — one of Scotland’s most remarkable historic landscapes. Built by the Lindsay family in the 16th century, the castle was designed as a refined residence rather than a fortress, with tall red‑sandstone walls and graceful architectural details that still give it a distinctive charm. Inside the tower house, visitors can explore atmospheric chambers with surviving fireplaces, narrow stairways and views across the surrounding countryside. The great hall area hints at the domestic life of a noble family, while the upper floors reveal how status and comfort shaped the castle’s layout. The Garden of Edzell is the true highlight. Created around 1604, it features carved stone panels representing the Liberal Arts, the Cardinal Virtues and the Planetary Deities — an extraordinary Renaissance statement of learning and symbolism. The garden’s summer house and its geometric layout add to the sense of elegance and intellectual ambition.
