Arbroath Signal Tower Museum

About

Arbroath’s Signal Tower Museum is a beautifully preserved reminder of the town’s deep maritime heritage, built in 1813 as the shore base for the Bell Rock Lighthouse. From here, keepers’ families lived, supplies were organised and vital communication with the offshore lighthouse was maintained. Its elegant whitewashed buildings, facing the North Sea, still carry the atmosphere of a working coastal station. Inside, the museum offers a vivid journey through lighthouse history. One of the most interesting features is the recreated keeper’s room, showing the sparse furnishings and practical tools used by those who maintained one of the world’s most remote lights. Exhibits explain how the Bell Rock Lighthouse — designed by Robert Stevenson — was constructed on a submerged reef, an engineering achievement often described as one of Scotland’s greatest. Visitors can explore models, original equipment, logbooks and signalling devices that reveal how messages were sent between shore and lighthouse before modern technology. The museum also covers Arbroath’s fishing traditions, with displays of nets, boat gear and photographs that capture the life of a busy harbour community.

Location

Arbroath Signal Tower Museum sits right by the sea in the historic harbour town of Arbroath on the Angus coast. You will find it at Ladyloan, Arbroath, Angus DD11 1PU, Scotland, just off the A92 beside Arbroath Harbour. It is an easy ten minute walk from both the train station and bus station. The building itself is the original 1813 shore station for the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse, built to house the keepers' families and the shore staff who kept the light running. Today it is a museum telling the story of that incredible engineering feat and Arbroath's fishing past. If you like museums, head a little inland to the St Vigeans Sculptured Stones Museum in the village of St Vigeans, which holds a superb collection of Pictish stones. Around town you also have the Arbroath Art Gallery, Kerr's Miniature Railway at the West Links which is Scotland's oldest miniature railway, and the dramatic Arbroath Cliffs and coastal path up towards Auchmithie for sea views. Further afield in Angus you are not far from House of Dun, Glamis Castle and Edzell Castle if you want to make a full day of castles and coast.
