Meffan Museum

About

Meffan Museum and Art Gallery is one of Angus’s most characterful cultural spaces, founded in 1898 through a bequest from the Meffan sisters. Their wish was simple yet ambitious: to create a place where Forfar’s history and artistic life could be preserved and celebrated. Today, the museum blends archaeology, social history, and contemporary art in a compact but surprisingly rich setting. One of its most intriguing features is the Pictish collection, including carved stones that link Forfar to the early medieval kingdom of the Picts. These stones, with their enigmatic symbols, are among the region’s most important archaeological treasures. The museum also explores Forfar’s textile heritage, showcasing looms, tools, and stories from the town’s once‑thriving linen industry. The art galleries host rotating exhibitions by Scottish artists, mixing painting, sculpture, and craft. A highlight is the annual open exhibition, which has become a respected platform for emerging talent. Visitors can also see displays on local life, from traditional trades to community milestones, creating a vivid portrait of Forfar across generations.
