Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum

About

Kirriemuir’s Gateway to the Glens Museum is a compact, characterful museum that captures the spirit of the town and its dramatic surrounding landscape. Housed in the former Town House, it blends local history with stories of the people who shaped Kirriemuir’s identity. One of its most engaging facts is that Kirriemuir was once a centre for weaving and shoemaking, trades that influenced the town’s growth long before tourism and heritage took centre stage. Inside, visitors can explore displays on J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, who was born in Kirriemuir. Personal items, photographs, and early editions reveal the author’s deep connection to the town. The museum also highlights Kirriemuir’s musical legacy, including tributes to rock musician Bon Scott, whose global influence contrasts strikingly with the town’s quiet rural charm. The social history galleries present everyday life across centuries: agricultural tools, domestic objects, and stories of local families. A standout section covers the Angus Glens, offering insight into wildlife, geology, and the traditions of hill communities. Together, these exhibits create a vivid portrait of a town that has always balanced creativity, industry, and rugged natural beauty.

A few miles south lies Glamis Castle, the grand historic home with royal connections, beautiful gardens and a long, colourful past that draws many visitors.
