Dunollie Castle

About

Dunollie Castle, overlooking Oban Bay, is a hauntingly atmospheric ruin with over a thousand years of history. Long associated with the MacDougall clan, it began as an early medieval fort before evolving into the 15th‑century tower house whose remains stand today. A compelling fact is that Dunollie once controlled key sea routes along the western coast, making it a vital stronghold in the power struggles of Argyll’s clans. Inside the castle precinct, visitors can explore the surviving tower walls and courtyard, where interpretive panels explain the site’s strategic role and the MacDougalls’ turbulent past. Though roofless, the tower retains enough structure to convey its original scale, and the views from the surrounding paths reveal exactly why this headland was chosen for defence. Below the castle sits the 1745 House Museum, a charming addition that brings the clan’s story to life. Its rooms display family artefacts, traditional clothing, letters and domestic objects that trace centuries of MacDougall heritage. The weaving and textile exhibits are particularly engaging, highlighting local craftsmanship and the clan’s cultural legacy.
