Tarbert Castle

About

Tarbert Castle, overlooking East Loch Tarbert, is a historic stronghold with deep royal connections. Though now a ruin, it was once a key fortress guarding the narrow isthmus between Kintyre and the mainland. A particularly interesting fact is that Robert the Bruce personally oversaw major rebuilding works here in the early 14th century, strengthening Tarbert as part of his campaign to secure the western seaboard. Inside the surviving walls, visitors can explore the remains of the tower house and defensive structures that reveal how the castle evolved across centuries. The layout shows clear evidence of Bruce’s improvements, including thicker walls and a more fortified entrance. Interpretive panels help reconstruct daily life within the castle, from its role in medieval warfare to its later use as a garrison during clan conflicts. The site also offers insight into Tarbert’s strategic importance: controlling this narrow land bridge meant controlling movement between Argyll and Kintyre. From the upper paths, views across the loch and harbour make the castle’s position instantly understandable.
