Strachur Smiddy Museum and Crafts is a charming heritage site that preserves the working life of a traditional Highland blacksmith. Set in an 18th‑century smiddy beside the old coaching road, it offers an intimate glimpse into rural craftsmanship and community history in Cowal. Inside, the original forge is the star attraction. Visitors can see the heavy bellows, anvils and tools exactly where generations of smiths once shaped horseshoes, repaired farm equipment and crafted everyday ironwork. The smiddy remained in use until the 1950s, and many of the tools still bear the marks of long service. Photographs and documents tell stories of local families who relied on the smith for transport, farming and fishing. A small exhibition space displays domestic objects, agricultural tools and memorabilia from village life, illustrating how the smiddy stood at the centre of the community. The crafts area adds a modern twist: local makers showcase pottery, textiles, woodwork and jewellery, continuing the tradition of skilled hands shaping useful and beautiful things.
