Kirkcudbright Tolbooth

About

Kirkcudbright Tolbooth is one of the town’s most characterful historic buildings, standing on the High Street as a reminder of centuries of civic life. Built in the early 17th century, it served as the burgh’s administrative centre and jail, and one interesting fact is that its upper floors once held prisoners awaiting trial or punishment. The building later became a focal point for Kirkcudbright’s artistic community, adding a cultural layer to its civic past. Inside, the Tolbooth retains much of its original atmosphere. The former council chamber, with its timber beams and period detailing, evokes the decisions and debates that shaped the town. Interpretation panels explain the building’s role in local governance, law enforcement and trade, offering insight into how a Scottish burgh functioned in earlier centuries. The old jail cells are among the most memorable features. Their thick walls, iron fittings and cramped proportions give a vivid sense of the conditions faced by prisoners. Exhibits highlight notable cases and the evolution of justice in the region. Today, the Tolbooth also hosts displays connected to Kirkcudbright’s artistic heritage, linking civic history with the town’s creative identity.
