Lennox Castle

About

Lennox Castle, rising above the woodland near Lennoxtown, is one of East Dunbartonshire’s most striking yet little‑known historic sites. Built in the 1830s for the powerful Lennox family, it was designed in a dramatic Scottish baronial style, complete with turrets, battlements and grand reception rooms. Though now a ruin, its silhouette still hints at the scale and ambition of the original mansion. Inside the shell of the building, you can trace the layout of the former great hall, staircases and service wings. The castle’s stonework reveals fine craftsmanship, with carved details and imposing arches that survived decades of later use. One of the most interesting chapters in its history came in the 20th century, when Lennox Castle was converted into a hospital; remnants of this period, such as altered doorways and institutional fittings, add an unexpected layer to the visit. The surrounding grounds, once formal gardens, are now reclaimed by nature. Walking paths lead past old estate walls, fragments of outbuildings and viewpoints over the Campsie Fells. Although access inside the structure is restricted for safety, the exterior and its atmospheric setting offer a compelling glimpse into a grand house that evolved, declined and ultimately became one of Scotland’s most haunting ruins.

Location

Lennox Castle stands on the edge of Lennoxtown in East Dunbartonshire, roughly a dozen miles north of Glasgow at the foot of the Campsie Fells. The address is Glen Road, Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, G66 7LA. What remains today is the shell of a grand Victorian mansion that later served as part of a large hospital complex; the building itself is a ruin after a fire some years ago. Just a short distance away you’ll find Mugdock Country Park with the ruins of Mugdock Castle and the remains of Craigend Castle, plus woodland walks and a visitor centre. The Campsie Fells rise right behind the village and offer easy hill paths with wide views. Part of the old estate grounds now holds Celtic Football Club’s training centre, and the nearby village of Lennoxtown itself has a few local spots to explore if you’re passing through.
