Lennoxlove House

About

Lennoxlove House, just south of Haddington, is one of East Lothian’s most distinguished historic mansions. Its origins stretch back to the 14th century, and the building evolved over time into a graceful Scottish tower house with later Renaissance and baronial additions. Today it is the seat of the Duke of Hamilton, and its interiors preserve a remarkable collection of art, furniture and family heirlooms. Inside, visitors can explore richly furnished rooms that feel more like a lived‑in home than a museum. The Great Hall, with its timber ceiling and ancestral portraits, sets the tone. The drawing room and dining room display fine tapestries, silverware and European paintings, while the library holds rare volumes reflecting centuries of collecting. One of the most intriguing treasures is Mary, Queen of Scots’ death mask, a haunting relic that links the house to one of Scotland’s most dramatic historical figures. The chapel, with its carved woodwork and intimate scale, offers a quieter moment within the tour. Throughout the house, small details—secret stairways, carved stone lintels, and original fireplaces—reveal its medieval roots beneath later elegance. Outside, the grounds include lawns, woodland and remnants of the old estate layout, creating a serene setting for one of Scotland’s most storied private houses.
