Mearns Castle

About

Mearns Castle, standing above Newton Mearns, is one of East Renfrewshire’s most striking medieval landmarks. Built in the early 15th century by Sir John Mure, it served as both a fortified tower house and a symbol of the family’s growing influence. Its thick stone walls, narrow windows and elevated position reveal its defensive purpose, designed to withstand the turbulence of late‑medieval Scotland. Although the castle is now incorporated into a modern church complex, its original structure remains remarkably intact. Inside, visitors can explore the lower vaulted chamber, once used for storage and protection during sieges. The great hall above, though altered over time, still hints at its former grandeur, where the Mures would have hosted meals, meetings and local gatherings. The spiral staircase, a classic feature of tower houses, connects the floors and offers a sense of how residents moved through the building centuries ago. One of the most interesting aspects of Mearns Castle is its continuity: despite changing roles—from family stronghold to estate building and finally a place of worship—it retains its medieval character. Its blend of ancient stonework and contemporary surroundings makes it a rare example of a historic tower house still actively used by the community.
