St Andrews Heritage Museum

About

St Andrews Heritage Museum is one of Fife’s most intimate historical museums, set within a pair of 17th‑century cottages just steps from the cathedral precinct. Its charm lies in how closely it connects visitors to everyday life in the town, revealing the domestic routines, trades and traditions that shaped St Andrews long before golf and academia defined its identity. Inside, the period rooms recreate the feel of a traditional burgh household. Low ceilings, timber beams and hearth‑centred living spaces show how families cooked, worked and gathered. Everyday objects — pottery, tools, clothing and household utensils — give the rooms a warm, lived‑in authenticity. The fishing and coastal heritage displays highlight St Andrews’ maritime past, with nets, creels, model boats and stories of the town’s once‑thriving fishing community. The craft and trade exhibits explore local industries such as shoemaking, tailoring and weaving, each represented through original tools and reconstructed workspaces.
