Lochindorb Castle

About

Lochindorb Castle, set on an island in the middle of Lochindorb near Grantown‑on‑Spey, is one of the Highlands’ most atmospheric medieval ruins. Built in the 13th century, it became a stronghold of the powerful Comyn family, rivals of Robert the Bruce. Its most famous resident was the formidable Regent of Scotland, Isabella of France—known as the “She‑Wolf of France”—who used the castle as her base during campaigns in the north. English forces later occupied it, and by the 15th century it had fallen into decline. Although roofless, the castle’s structure remains striking. The thick curtain walls form a large rectangular enclosure, still clearly visible from the shore. Inside, you can trace the outlines of internal buildings, including the hall and domestic quarters that once supported a sizeable garrison. The gatehouse area, though eroded, shows how the island fortress controlled access with boats and defensive positions. The surrounding loch acts as a natural moat, giving a vivid sense of its strategic importance. Reaching the castle requires a boat or a long view from the shoreline, but the setting is unforgettable. The island sits in open moorland, often wrapped in mist, with the water reflecting the stark stone walls.
