North West Highlands Geopark

About

The North West Highlands Geopark is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Europe, a vast outdoor museum where 3 billion years of Earth history are exposed in dramatic cliffs, folded mountains and ancient shorelines. Stretching from Ullapool to Cape Wrath, it showcases some of the oldest rocks on the planet, shaped by continental collisions, vanished oceans and Ice Age glaciers. Inside its visitor centres—particularly in Knockan Crag—you can explore clear, engaging displays that explain the Moine Thrust, a geological feature that once sparked fierce scientific debate. Interactive exhibits show how older rocks were pushed over younger ones, overturning Victorian ideas about how mountains form. The Rock Room and outdoor trails highlight striking formations, including ripple marks left by prehistoric seas and boulders transported by glaciers. The geopark also celebrates human history. At the Rock Stop in Unapool, you’ll find information on crofting, fishing and the communities that adapted to this rugged environment. Fossils, minerals and maps help visitors understand how geology shaped settlement patterns, wildlife and even local architecture.
