Scottish Maritime Museum

About

The Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine is one of North Ayrshire’s most dynamic heritage attractions, celebrating Scotland’s long relationship with shipbuilding, engineering and life at sea. Its most striking feature is the vast Linthouse building, a former shipyard engine shop transported from the Clyde and rebuilt on site—an extraordinary feat of industrial preservation. The museum also holds one of the country’s finest collections of historic vessels, including the MV Kyles, believed to be the oldest Clyde‑built ship still afloat. Inside, the galleries blend large‑scale engineering with personal stories. You can explore full‑size boats, ship models, navigation instruments and beautifully restored engines that once powered merchant ships and ferries. Interactive exhibits explain how shipyards shaped communities, while displays of tools, uniforms and photographs bring the human side of maritime work to life. One highlight is the recreated shipyard worker’s cottage, offering an intimate look at everyday domestic life. The museum’s outdoor area adds further depth, with slipways, workshops and additional vessels that show how ships were built, repaired and launched.

Location

The Scottish Maritime Museum is down at Irvine Harbour in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It's in a really atmospheric old industrial building that used to be part of the shipyard, so it fits perfectly. The address is The Linthouse Building, Harbour Road, Irvine KA12 8BT. There's also a second smaller part of the museum at 6 Gottries Road, Irvine KA12 8QE, just around the corner, where they have a recreated shipworker's tenement flat. Both are right by the harbour pontoons where you can see historic boats like the puffer Spartan. It's a great area to spend a few hours because everything is close together. Right at the harbour you have the Harbourside and lots of walks along the beachfront to Irvine Beach Park. In the town centre you can pop over to Seagate Castle, a 16th century ruined townhouse, and to Stanecastle Tower which is one of the older bits of Irvine. If you like museums, you are spoiled nearby. A short drive takes you to Eglinton Country Park with Eglinton Castle ruins, to Kilwinning Abbey Tower Heritage Centre in the middle of Kilwinning, and to Dalgarven Mill Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume on the River Garnock. For more castles, Dundonald Castle sits on its hill just south of Irvine with lovely views over the coast.
