Muness Castle

About

Muness Castle on Unst, the northernmost castle in the British Isles, is a striking survival of late‑16th‑century architecture. Built in 1598 for Laurence Bruce, its design follows the Z‑plan style popular in Scotland at the time, with a central block flanked by two projecting towers. Although never completed to its original ambition, the castle’s remote setting and weathered stone give it an atmospheric, almost cinematic presence. One of the most interesting facts is that Muness was attacked by privateers in 1627, a reminder of how exposed Shetland was to Scandinavian and European raiders. Despite this, the castle remained a residence for decades before falling into disuse, leaving behind a remarkably intact shell. Inside, visitors can explore the great hall, where Bruce entertained guests and asserted his authority over the island. The hall’s large fireplace and surviving window openings hint at its former comfort. Narrow stairways lead to upper chambers and the towers, offering glimpses of defensive features such as gun loops and thick walls designed to withstand assault.
