Unst Heritage Centre

About

Unst Heritage Centre in Haroldswick is a warm, community‑run museum that captures the character of Britain’s northernmost inhabited island. Housed in a former school, it offers a rich blend of archaeology, social history and local craft, all shaped by Unst’s long tradition of resilience and creativity. One of the most interesting facts is Unst’s extraordinary density of Viking sites—the highest in the UK. The museum displays artefacts from Norse farms and burials, including tools, domestic items and replicas that help visitors imagine daily life during the island’s Scandinavian era. Maps and models show how Unst’s landscape preserves this heritage more clearly than almost anywhere else in Scotland. Inside, you’ll also find a charming collection of Shetland lace knitting, a craft for which Unst is world‑famous. Delicate shawls, intricate patterns and historic photographs reveal the skill and patience behind this tradition. Agricultural tools, fishing gear and household objects paint a vivid picture of crofting life, from peat cutting to boatbuilding. A highlight is the display on local schools and community memory, with class photos, handwritten notebooks and stories donated by island families.
