Chatelherault Hunting Lodge

About

Chatelherault Hunting Lodge, perched above the Avon Gorge near Hamilton, is one of Scotland’s finest examples of 18th‑century estate architecture. Designed in the 1730s by William Adam for the Dukes of Hamilton, it originally served as a grandiose façade for the family’s hunting grounds—more ornamental than functional, yet built with striking symmetry and theatrical flair. Its twin‑pavilion design, sweeping staircases and crisp sandstone detailing make it one of the most elegant buildings of its kind. Inside, the restored rooms offer a glimpse into aristocratic leisure. The central hall, with its high ceiling and refined plasterwork, once welcomed guests arriving for hunts and outdoor gatherings. Smaller chambers display exhibits on the Hamilton estate, including maps, portraits and objects that reveal how the surrounding landscape was shaped for sport and display. The lodge’s upper floors provide views across the gorge, emphasising its role as both lookout and architectural showpiece. One of the most interesting aspects is the building’s survival. Once part of a vast ducal estate, it fell into ruin before being rescued in the 1970s and transformed into a visitor centre.
