Plas Newydd Anglesey

About

Set on the shores of the Menai Strait with breathtaking views towards the mountains of Eryri, Plas Newydd House and Garden is one of the most elegant historic estates in Wales. Home to the Marquesses of Anglesey for centuries, the mansion combines grand architecture, remarkable collections and spectacular gardens, making it one of Anglesey’s most celebrated visitor attractions. The house is best known for its extraordinary dining room mural, created by the renowned artist Rex Whistler. Known as Capriccio, this vast artwork stretches across an entire wall and is considered the largest canvas painting in the United Kingdom. Painted between 1936 and 1938, it depicts a fantastical harbour scene blending Italian-inspired architecture with views inspired by Snowdonia, creating one of the most impressive interiors in Britain. Beyond the famous mural, visitors can explore a series of beautifully furnished rooms, including the elegant Saloon, Music Room and Gothick Hall. These rooms reveal how generations of the Anglesey family lived, entertained guests and adapted the house over the centuries.
