Joseph Parry's Cottage

About

Tucked away in Chapel Row, Joseph Parry’s Cottage is one of Merthyr Tydfil’s most fascinating historic attractions. This modest stone house was built in 1825 for workers at the nearby Cyfarthfa Ironworks and is best known as the birthplace of Joseph Parry, born here in 1841. Parry would go on to become one of Wales’ most celebrated composers, remembered especially for the beloved song Myfanwy, which remains a favourite of Welsh male voice choirs today. What makes the cottage so special is its authenticity. Unlike the grand homes of industrial owners, this was an ordinary ironworker’s dwelling, offering a rare glimpse into the daily lives of working families during the Industrial Revolution. The interior has been carefully restored to reflect the 1840s, allowing visitors to step back into the world that Parry experienced as a child. Inside, visitors can explore a traditionally furnished living room complete with a range stove, simple household utensils, and period furniture that highlights the practical realities of Victorian life. One of the most poignant rooms is the bedroom where Joseph Parry was born, featuring period furnishings and objects that help recreate the atmosphere of the family home
