Usk Castle

About

Overlooking the historic market town of Usk, Usk Castle is one of Monmouthshire’s most enchanting medieval fortresses. Built around 1120 on a strategically important hilltop, the castle occupies a site with an even older past, as the Romans once maintained a military presence in the area before establishing their famous legionary fortress at nearby Caerleon. Throughout the Middle Ages, Usk Castle stood at the heart of the struggle for control of the Welsh Marches. It changed hands several times between Norman and Welsh forces, reflecting the turbulent history of the borderlands. One of the most significant events associated with the castle was the Battle of Pwll Melyn in 1405, a key confrontation during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr. Today, visitors can explore substantial ruins that provide a fascinating glimpse into castle life. The surviving remains include sections of curtain walls, gatehouse structures, towers, and defensive earthworks. One of the most unusual features is the well-preserved Dovecote Tower, a rare survival that highlights the castle’s domestic as well as military functions. The elevated position also offers wonderful views over the town and surrounding countryside.
