Perched on a wooded spur above the River Neckar, Burg Zwingenberg is one of the most picturesque castles along the Neckar Valley. Standing about 50 metres above the river where the Neckar cuts through the Odenwald hills, the fortress occupies a dramatic location and remains remarkably well preserved compared with many medieval castles in the region. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was probably built by Wilhelm von Wimpfen, a ministerial noble associated with the Staufer rulers. The first documented reference appears in 1326. Its early owners, the Lords of Zwingenberg, gained a reputation as robber knights and were expelled in 1363. By imperial order, the castle was partly destroyed, but it was rebuilt after 1403 by the Lords of Hirschhorn, who transformed it into the impressive residence that largely survives today. Visitors can admire a fascinating combination of medieval fortifications and residential buildings. Massive curtain walls, towers, gateways, and the inner courtyard reveal the castle’s defensive past, while the elegant residential sections reflect its later role as a noble residence. The castle’s elevated position provides magnificent views across the Neckar Valley and the surrounding forests of the Odenwald.

Burg Steinsberg stands on the highest hill of the Kraichgau in Baden-Württemberg, at Steinsberg 1, 74889 Sinsheim-Weiler. This medieval castle sits on an old volcanic cone and is easy to spot from afar thanks to its tall octagonal keep, often called the compass of the Kraichgau for the wide views it offers over the rolling hills. You can walk freely around the walls and courtyards, and climb the keep for a panorama that stretches across the landscape on a clear day. A tavern in the old buildings serves regional food and has a pleasant beer garden. At the foot of the hill stands the small St. Anna chapel, and vineyards cover the slopes around the site. Nearby the town of Sinsheim has its well-known Technik Museum and other attractions, while the gentle Kraichgau countryside invites short walks through the fields and woods. It feels like an open, relaxed place where the old stone walls, the sweeping views, and the surrounding hills come together without any hurry.
