Bauernhaus-Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg

About

The Bauernhaus-Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg is one of southern Germany’s most charming open-air museums, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into rural life in Upper Swabia and the Allgäu over the past several centuries. Nestled in the scenic countryside near Lake Constance, the museum combines history, architecture, nature, and traditional farming culture in a unique setting. Spread across a large landscaped site, the museum features more than twenty historic farmhouses, barns, workshops, and outbuildings that were carefully relocated and reconstructed from villages throughout the region. Walking through the grounds feels like stepping into a living village where each building tells its own story about the people who once lived and worked there. Inside the beautifully preserved houses, visitors can explore original living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, stables, and workshops furnished as they would have appeared generations ago. The exhibitions reveal how farming families managed daily life, from cooking and crafts to agriculture and animal husbandry.

Location

The Bauernhaus-Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben sits at Vogter Straße 4 in 88364 Wolfegg, Baden-Württemberg. It spreads across open countryside just outside the village, with historic farmhouses set among meadows and gardens that already feel part of the landscape.A short drive or walk into Wolfegg brings you to Schloss Wolfegg, the Renaissance castle that still belongs to the local princely family and dominates the skyline with its elegant wings. Right in the village you will also find the Automuseum, filled with classic cars and everyday objects from earlier decades. The baroque parish church of St. Katharina stands nearby, its interior rich with stucco and light. A little further afield the Waldburg rises on a hill, offering wide views across Upper Swabia. Lakes and quiet walking paths surround the whole area, so after exploring the farmhouses you can easily slip into a slower pace among the hills. Everything stays close enough for an easy, unhurried day.
