Võru Ekaterina kirik

About

Võru Ekaterina Church, also known as St. Catherine’s Orthodox Church, is one of the most distinctive sacred buildings in southeastern Estonia. Completed in 1806, it was built during the reign of Catherine the Great, whose name it carries, and reflects the expanding presence of Orthodox communities in the region at the time. Its architecture blends Russian ecclesiastical tradition with local building styles, resulting in a compact yet elegant structure crowned with a characteristic onion dome. The church’s interior is notable for its iconostasis, a richly decorated screen separating the nave from the sanctuary. Many of its icons date back to the 19th century and were crafted by regional artists influenced by both Russian and Baltic traditions. The churchyard also preserves memorials linked to Võru’s multicultural past, reflecting the coexistence of Lutheran, Orthodox, and later Seto communities. An interesting detail is that the church remained active even during periods when many religious institutions faced restrictions. It served as a spiritual anchor for Võru’s Orthodox population and continues to host services, feast‑day celebrations, and community gatherings.
