Archbishop's Palace Veszprém

About

The Archbishop’s Palace is one of the crown jewels of Veszprém Vár, reflecting centuries of ecclesiastical power and refined Baroque taste. Built in the 18th century on medieval foundations, it served as the residence of the archbishops who shaped the city’s spiritual and cultural life. Its elegant façade, with sculpted window frames and a richly decorated portal, immediately signals the prestige of the Hungarian Church in this historic bishopric. Inside, the palace reveals a sequence of stately rooms adorned with stucco ceilings, carved doors, and period furnishings. The grand staircase, framed by wrought‑iron balustrades, is one of the building’s most photographed features. Visitors can explore exhibitions that highlight the history of the Veszprém archdiocese, including portraits of bishops, liturgical treasures, and archival documents that trace the region’s religious development. A highlight is the palace chapel, where delicate frescoes and gilded ornamentation create an intimate sacred atmosphere. From the upper floors, windows open toward the Séd Valley and the Fire Tower, offering some of the finest views in the castle district.

The Gizella Chapel (Boldog Gizella kápolna), the oldest building in Veszprém from the 13th century, sits between the archbishop's palace and the grand provost's palace. The St. George's Chapel, believed to be Hungary's oldest church, is also nearby within the castle walls. At the northern end of the castle, statues of King Saint Stephen and Queen Gisela offer a stunning viewpoint over the city, the Séd Valley, and the Bakony hills. The Fire-watch Tower (Őrtorony), a 48-meter tower that chimes music hourly, provides panoramic views of Lake Balaton and the volcanic mountains.
