Cathedral of St. James Šibenik

Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik is one of Europe’s most remarkable Renaissance monuments and the only cathedral in the world built entirely of stone—without wood or brick. Completed in 1535 after more than a century of work, it reflects the ambition of a small Adriatic town determined to create a masterpiece that could rival Venice. Its architect, Juraj Dalmatinac, introduced innovative construction techniques, including interlocking stone slabs that fit together like a giant puzzle. Inside, the cathedral feels both monumental and intimate. The stone dome filters soft light onto the nave, highlighting the elegant proportions and finely carved details. The baptistery is a standout: a jewel‑like space decorated with delicate reliefs and considered one of the finest Renaissance interiors in Croatia. Visitors also notice the famous frieze of 71 sculpted heads on the exterior—portraits of real Šibenik citizens, immortalised with expressive, sometimes humorous features.
