The Ornamented Mosque in Travnik, known locally as Šarena džamija, is one of Bosnia’s most distinctive religious landmarks. Built in 1815, it stands out for its richly painted interior—an unusual feature in Islamic architecture, where decoration is often more restrained. Travnik’s craftsmen covered the walls with floral motifs, geometric patterns, and bright colours inspired by Ottoman art, creating a space that feels both intimate and theatrical. Inside, visitors can admire the beautifully carved wooden mahfil (balcony) and the mihrab framed by delicate hand‑painted ornamentation. The calligraphy panels are particularly striking, blending classical Ottoman script with local artistic flair. The mosque’s wooden ceiling, decorated in concentric circles, is one of its most photographed details. An interesting fact is that the mosque was financed by Travnik’s viziers, who wanted a place of worship that reflected the town’s status as Bosnia’s Ottoman capital. It also survived several fires, with each restoration preserving the original colour scheme, making it a rare example of continuity in Bosnian religious art.
