Počitelj Fortress

Počitelj Fortress is the crown of the historic hillside settlement overlooking the Neretva River, a commanding medieval stronghold that shaped the town’s strategic importance for centuries. Built in the 14th century and expanded during the Ottoman period, it served as both a defensive hub and a watchpoint controlling the vital trade route between the Adriatic and inland Bosnia. Its dramatic position makes it one of the most photogenic fortresses in the country. Inside the complex, visitors can explore a network of stone ramparts, towers, and stairways that climb steeply toward the main keep. The most interesting feature is the octagonal tower, offering sweeping views of the river canyon and the terraced stone houses below. The interior rooms are simple but atmospheric, with narrow windows designed for archers and thick walls that reveal the fortress’s military purpose. Walking through the site, you’ll also encounter remnants of Ottoman‑era additions, including defensive walls and lookout posts that blend seamlessly with the older medieval core. The climb to the top is steep but rewarding, giving a sense of how soldiers once monitored the valley.
