The Box, Plymouth
The Box in Plymouth is one of Devon’s most ambitious cultural spaces, combining museum, gallery, and archive under a striking contemporary roof of giant “archive boxes.” Opened in 2020, it reimagines how a city tells its story, blending deep history with bold modern art. One of its most fascinating features is the Cottonian Collection, an 18th‑century treasure of rare books, Old Master drawings, and antiquities. Nearby, the Media Lab showcases Plymouth’s remarkable film and photographic archives, including early cinema equipment and thousands of historic images. The Mayflower exhibition explores the city’s role in the 1620 voyage, using immersive displays to connect local history with global narratives. Inside, visitors can see the giant figureheads suspended dramatically from the ceiling—colourful naval carvings rescued from historic ships. The Natural History gallery presents Devon’s wildlife through beautifully preserved specimens, while the Contemporary Art galleries host rotating exhibitions from leading British and international artists.
