Pevensey Court House Museum and Gaol sits on the High Street in the historic village of Pevensey, East Sussex. The address is High Street, Pevensey, BN24 5LG, right in the centre of the old village and just a short stroll from the castle walls. This 16th-century building once served as the local courthouse, town hall and gaol. You can still stand in the old dock, step into the prison cells and see the exercise yard and stocks that were used until the late 1800s, along with displays that cover Pevensey’s long story from Roman times through to its smuggling past. Right next door is Pevensey Castle, the impressive Roman and Norman fortress whose massive walls dominate the village. Across the way stands the Mint House, a timber-framed building with its own tales of local folklore. A short walk takes you to the shingle beach at Pevensey Bay, and the village church of St Nicolas is close by too. A little further afield you’ll find Herstmonceux Castle with its moat and gardens. Everything is clustered around the High Street so you can move easily between the courthouse, the castle and the rest of the village without covering much ground.
