Bishop’s Waltham Palace is one of Hampshire’s most atmospheric medieval ruins, once a lavish residence of the powerful Bishops of Winchester. Founded in the 12th century and expanded over several centuries, it became a grand complex used for royal visits, political gatherings and ecclesiastical administration. Its most dramatic moment came in the 1640s, when Parliamentarian forces destroyed much of the palace during the Civil War, leaving the evocative remains seen today. Inside the site, visitors can wander through the outlines of the great hall, chambers and service buildings that once formed an impressive episcopal household. The scale is striking: tall walls, window arches and surviving doorways reveal how richly appointed the palace once was. The great hall’s footprint is particularly clear, showing where feasts and official ceremonies took place. One of the most interesting features is the moat and earthworks surrounding the palace, emphasising its semi‑fortified nature. Interpretive panels explain how the bishops used the palace as both a residence and a centre of regional power, hosting kings including Henry VIII.
