It is the former home of the famous 18th-century naturalist Gilbert White, set in about 25 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland, right in the centre of the village. The house is also home to The Oates Museum, dedicated to Captain Lawrence Oates of the Antarctic. It is a great base for exploring the area. Right behind the house you have Selborne Common and Selborne Hanger, managed by the National Trust, with lovely woodland walks and views over the South Downs National Park. The village itself is very pretty and peaceful, with traditional pubs and cottages. Just a short drive away is Chawton, where you can visit Jane Austen's House Museum, the cottage where Jane Austen lived, and Chawton House, the Elizabethan manor that belonged to her brother. The market town of Alton is also close, with the Curtis Museum and the Allen Gallery for local history and ceramics. You are also right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, so you have plenty of countryside.
