The Needles Old Battery and New Battery
The Needles Old Battery and New Battery form one of the Isle of Wight’s most dramatic historic sites, perched high above the chalk cliffs with sweeping views over the famous Needles rocks. Built in the 1860s, the Old Battery was designed to defend the Solent from French attack, and its most interesting fact is how its guns were positioned in deep, protective emplacements carved directly into the cliff — a rare example of Victorian coastal engineering. Inside the Old Battery, visitors can explore the original gun rooms, underground tunnels and the atmospheric cartridge store. The tunnel leading to the searchlight position is a highlight, ending in a spectacular viewpoint suspended above the sea. Exhibits explain the fort’s role in both world wars, including its use as an observation post during the D‑Day preparations. The New Battery, built higher up the cliff in the 1890s, has a very different story. In the mid‑20th century it became a secret testing site for Britain’s space programme. One of the most fascinating features is the exhibition on the Black Arrow rocket, which was assembled and tested here before launching the UK’s only home‑built satellite into orbit.

You will find it at West High Down, Alum Bay, Isle of Wight PO39 0JH. It is perched high on the chalk cliffs above the famous Needles rocks. The Old Battery was built between 1861 and 1863 as a Victorian coastal defence, and the New Battery came later in 1895. Later the New Battery became a top secret rocket testing site in the Cold War where the Black Knight and Black Arrow space rockets were tested. Today you walk from the car park down to the Old Battery with its original guns and a narrow tunnel to a searchlight position, then on to the New Battery with its rocket displays and amazing views. It is a great place to explore the whole west of the island. Right below you have Alum Bay with its coloured sands and the chairlift down to the beach, plus the Needles Landmark Attraction. Very close by is Farringford House at Freshwater Bay, once the home of poet Tennyson, and Tennyson Down with its monument. For castles and grand houses, you are not far from Yarmouth Castle, Henry VIII's little fort on the harbour, Carisbrooke Castle in the middle of the island where Charles I was imprisoned, and Osborne House in East Cowes, Queen Victoria's beautiful seaside palace. You also have Hurst Castle just across the Solent and Fort Victoria museum nearby. It is history, space rockets and sea views all in one place.
