Dinosaur Isle
Dinosaur Isle in Sandown is the Isle of Wight’s flagship natural history museum, dedicated to the island’s extraordinary fossil record. Designed to resemble a giant pterosaur, the building itself is an interesting fact: it reflects the island’s reputation as one of Europe’s richest dinosaur sites, with discoveries spanning more than 125 million years. Inside, visitors can explore life‑sized reconstructions of the island’s most famous dinosaurs, including Iguanodon, Neovenator and Eotyrannus, all species first identified from local finds. The museum’s fossil displays are a highlight, featuring real bones, teeth, footprints and plant remains that reveal what the island looked like during the Early Cretaceous period. Interactive exhibits explain how dinosaurs lived, hunted and evolved, making the science accessible to all ages. One of the most compelling sections showcases fossils found by amateur collectors along the island’s beaches — a reminder that new discoveries are still made today. The museum also presents palaeontology tools and techniques, showing how experts extract, clean and study ancient remains.
Sandown United Kingdom
You will find it at Culver Parade, Sandown, Isle of Wight PO36 8QA. It sits right on the seafront at Sandown, in a purpose built building shaped like a giant pterosaur. It is Britain's first dedicated dinosaur museum, opened in 2001, and it is packed with over a thousand fossils, life sized reconstructions and animatronic dinosaurs. The Isle of Wight is famous worldwide for its fossils, and this is where you can see them all. It is perfectly placed for exploring Sandown and the east of the island. You are right by Sandown beach and Sandown Pier, and just a short walk from the beach where fossil walks are often run. Very close by you have Sandown Fort and the Isle of Wight Zoo, which is housed in the old fort. For more history you are not far from Brading Roman Villa with its stunning mosaic floors, and further inland you have Carisbrooke Castle, the big medieval castle where Charles I was imprisoned, with its museum. Osborne House in East Cowes is also within easy reach, Queen Victoria's beautiful seaside palace with terraces and private beach. If you love museums you also have the Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum at Arreton Barns, and Bembridge Fort and the Bembridge Heritage Centre nearby. It is dinosaurs on the beach, with castles and palaces all around.
