National Trust - Chartwell
Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s beloved home in Kent, is one of the National Trust’s most evocative historic houses. More than a residence, it was Churchill’s retreat, studio and thinking space for over four decades. The house remains much as he left it, offering an unusually intimate glimpse into the life of Britain’s wartime leader. Inside, visitors can explore rooms filled with personal objects: his uniforms, cigars, letters, and the red‑brick study where he drafted speeches and books. The dining room displays gifts from world leaders, while the library reflects his passion for history and literature. One of the most interesting features is the collection of Churchill’s own paintings—over 150 works—revealing a surprisingly accomplished artist who found solace in colour and landscape. The studio, set slightly apart from the house, is a highlight. Preserved exactly as Churchill used it, it contains easels, brushes and unfinished canvases that show his working process. The gardens are equally compelling: terraced lawns, a walled garden, and the lakes he personally helped shape. Visitors can also see the golden‑brick wall he famously built himself, a testament to his love of manual craftsmanship.

Chartwell is the famous former family home of Sir Winston Churchill, known for its beautiful gardens and rich history. You can find it on Mapleton Road, Westerham, Kent, TN16 1PS. Tucked away in the scenic Kent countryside, it sits just south of the historic town of Westerham, making it easy to reach by car from nearby London or Sevenoaks. Because of its position in a countryside packed with heritage sites, you have plenty of iconic places to explore right in the local area. Just down the road in Westerham is Quebec House, the charming 18th-century childhood home of General James Wolfe. A short drive east brings you to Hever Castle, a romantic 13th-century moated castle that was once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. If you travel a few miles toward Sevenoaks, you can visit Knole, a grand historic house set inside a vast deer park, or head to Emmetts Garden, an elegant hillside estate famous for its seasonal flower displays and woodland walks. Nearby Chiddingstone Castle offers another fantastic stop with its unique collection of global artifacts set in lovely grounds. Heading slightly northwest across the border into Downe also brings you to Down House, the historic home of Charles Darwin. With so many historic houses, fortresses, and museums close by, Chartwell makes a brilliant base for a full day out in Kent.
