Clifton Park Museum
Clifton Park Museum is one of South Yorkshire’s most charming local museums, set within a beautifully restored Georgian house overlooking the park in Rotherham. Once the home of the Walker family, the building retains its elegant period character, with high ceilings, decorative plasterwork and a welcoming, domestic scale that makes each room feel like a story waiting to unfold. Inside, visitors encounter a rich blend of social history, archaeology and decorative arts. One of the museum’s most famous treasures is the Roman Rhinoceros, a rare carved figure discovered in the area and now a beloved symbol of Rotherham’s ancient past. The archaeology galleries also feature Roman pottery, medieval finds and objects that trace the region’s long settlement history. The recreated Victorian rooms are a highlight, offering an intimate look at everyday life through original furniture, clothing and household items. The Childhood Gallery adds a nostalgic touch with toys, games and school materials spanning more than a century. Local industry is represented through displays on ironworking, glassmaking and the trades that shaped Rotherham’s growth.

You will find it inside Clifton Park itself, at Clifton Lane, Rotherham, South Yorkshire S65 2AA. It sits in the middle of the big public park just south of Rotherham town centre, in a handsome Georgian house that used to be the park's mansion. The museum is free and covers local history, archaeology, and even has Victorian rooms and old toys that kids love. The best thing is you are already in Clifton Park, so you get everything around you without having to drive anywhere else. The park has gardens, a water splash park in summer, mini golf, a skate park, and a garden centre and cafe. When you want to see more nearby, you are in a great spot for South Yorkshire. Wentworth Woodhouse, one of the biggest stately homes in Europe, is just a few miles away in Wentworth village. Wentworth Castle Gardens and its folly Stainborough Castle are close too and great for a walk with views. In Rotherham itself you have Rotherham Minster and the Chapel on the Bridge, which is really unusual. If you like more museums and castles, Conisbrough Castle, Cannon Hall Museum and Elsecar Heritage Centre are all within a short drive, and Yorkshire Sculpture Park is not far if you fancy mixing art with the outdoors.
