Magna Science Adventure Centre
Magna Science Adventure Centre is one of South Yorkshire’s most dramatic science attractions, housed inside the colossal former Templeborough steelworks. Its sheer scale sets the tone: towering steel columns, echoing halls and industrial shadows create an unforgettable backdrop for hands‑on exploration. The centre transforms this historic foundry into four immersive pavilions themed around the elements that once powered the steel industry—Air, Earth, Fire and Water. Inside, visitors encounter large‑scale interactive exhibits that make science physical and playful. In Fire, jets of flame leap into the air at the push of a button, echoing the heat of molten steel. Water features swirling vortices, pumps and channels that reveal the power of fluid dynamics. Air invites experimentation with wind, pressure and flight, while Earth explores geology, mining and the raw materials that fed the furnaces. One of Magna’s most striking experiences is The Big Melt, a multimedia show that recreates the thunderous process of steelmaking with light, sound and vibration. It takes place in the original melt shop, offering a rare sense of industrial theatre.

You will find it at Magna Way, Templeborough, Rotherham, South Yorkshire S60 1FD. It is set inside the huge former Templeborough steelworks, just off Sheffield Road between Rotherham and Sheffield, and you cannot miss the big industrial building. It is built around the four elements earth, air, fire and water, with hands on exhibits and the famous Big Melt show. The location is really handy for exploring the rest of the area. Right nearby you have the South Yorkshire Transport Museum at Aldwarke if you like old buses and vehicles, and not far away is Clifton Park Museum sitting in its big park with gardens, splash park and mini golf. If you want more history and grand houses, Wentworth Woodhouse is just a few minutes away and is one of the biggest stately homes in Europe. Wentworth Castle Gardens with its folly Stainborough Castle is also close for a walk and views. For industrial heritage, you have Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, Elsecar Heritage Centre with its craft shops and heritage railway, and Conisbrough Castle which is a beautiful medieval castle. Meadowhall for shopping and eating and the centre of Sheffield with its Millennium Gallery and Winter Garden are both within easy reach too.
