Eye Castle

About

Eye Castle is a small but evocative ruin perched on a high mound overlooking the Suffolk countryside. Built shortly after the Norman Conquest, it once formed part of a strategic network of fortifications across East Anglia. Although only fragments survive today, the site remains rich in atmosphere and historical intrigue. The most striking feature is the 19th‑century octagonal folly tower, built on the original motte. It stands where the medieval keep once rose and offers a sense of the castle’s former dominance. Inside, visitors can explore the tower’s narrow stairways, simple chambers and rooftop platform, which provides sweeping views over Eye’s church, market town and surrounding fields. One of the most interesting facts is Eye Castle’s connection to rebellious noble Robert Malet, whose shifting loyalties during the reigns of William II and Henry I shaped the site’s early history. The castle later played a role in local conflicts, including skirmishes during the Anarchy in the 12th century. Around the mound, earthworks reveal the outlines of the bailey and defensive ditches, helping visitors imagine the original layout. Though modest compared with Suffolk’s larger fortresses, Eye Castle offers a quiet, atmospheric glimpse into Norman power and the layers of history that shaped this small market town.
