West Horsley Place

About

West Horsley Place is a mellow, honey‑coloured manor with a story that stretches back over six centuries. Once owned by the de Clares and later by the powerful Darcy family, it gained particular fame when Sir Walter Raleigh visited in the 1590s. In the 20th century it became the unexpected inheritance of broadcaster Bamber Gascoigne, who transformed its future by establishing the Mary Roxburghe Trust to restore and open the estate to the public. Inside, the house feels both grand and intimate. The Stone Hall, with its Tudor proportions and worn flagstones, sets the tone: a place shaped by generations rather than staged for display. The Drawing Room holds fine Georgian plasterwork and family portraits that trace the estate’s shifting fortunes. The Library, lined with dark shelves and scattered with personal objects, offers a glimpse into the intellectual life of its former owners. One of the most atmospheric rooms is the Morning Room, where soft light reveals original panelling and views across the gardens. Visitors can also explore the attic spaces used during the filming of Ghosts, which has made the house a modern cultural landmark.
