Discovery Museum

About

Discovery Museum in Newcastle is one of the North East’s most dynamic heritage spaces, celebrating innovation, industry and everyday life. One of its most interesting facts is that the museum’s star exhibit, Turbinia, was once the fastest ship in the world; in 1897 it famously sped through Queen Victoria’s Naval Review, outpacing every vessel and proving the power of steam‑turbine technology. Inside, the museum unfolds across several lively galleries. Story of the Tyne traces the river’s role in shaping the region, from shipbuilding and engineering to maritime trade. Models, tools and photographs reveal how Newcastle became a global industrial powerhouse. The Working Lives displays explore the social history of Tyneside, with objects from factories, mines and workshops that show how communities lived through rapid change. The Science Maze offers hands‑on experiments and interactive exhibits that make physics, engineering and technology accessible for all ages. The Fashion and Military galleries add further depth, featuring uniforms, textiles and personal stories that connect global events to local lives. Throughout the museum, large‑scale objects—engines, vehicles, machinery—create a sense of scale and ambition, while temporary exhibitions bring fresh perspectives on innovation, creativity and community history.
