Newcastle Castle

About

Newcastle Castle, rising above the River Tyne, is the fortress that gave the city its name. Built in the 12th century on the site of an earlier Norman stronghold, it is one of the best‑preserved medieval fortifications in northern England. An interesting fact is that the Black Gate, added in the 13th century, was once part of an elaborate barbican system designed to slow attackers with multiple layers of defence. Inside the Castle Keep, visitors can explore atmospheric stone chambers that reveal how the fortress functioned as both a military base and a royal residence. The Great Hall, with its high arches and thick walls, evokes the power of the Norman kings who once controlled the region. Narrow stairways lead to the roof, where panoramic views stretch across Newcastle’s skyline, the Tyne bridges, and the remains of the medieval town walls. The basement level contains the grim Gaol, a dark vaulted space where prisoners were held in harsh conditions. Interpretation panels and artefacts—weaponry, coins, and carved stones—help trace the castle’s evolution from Norman stronghold to later defensive outpost.
