Kenilworth Castle

About

Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire is one of England’s most atmospheric ruins, a vast medieval stronghold shaped by royal ambition, siege warfare, and Tudor romance. Founded in the Norman period, it grew into a mighty fortress under King John and later became the lavish residence of John of Gaunt. One remarkable fact is that in 1266 the castle endured the longest siege in medieval English history, lasting six months and ending only when its great lake—once the largest man‑made medieval water feature in England—was drained. Inside the ruins, visitors can explore the towering red‑sandstone keep, whose thick walls and narrow stairways evoke the castle’s defensive origins. The Tudor Palace, built by Robert Dudley for Queen Elizabeth I, offers the most evocative spaces: tall window frames, grand chambers, and the remains of ornate plasterwork hint at the splendour created to impress the queen during her famous 1575 visit. The Elizabethan Garden, meticulously recreated from contemporary descriptions, is a highlight. Its carved arbours, fountain, and fragrant planting restore a sense of Tudor elegance to the site. The exhibition in the Gatehouse adds depth with armour, household objects, and stories of the castle’s powerful owners.
